Zach's Story

Thank you for joining our Fundraising Campaign for 2020! This will be our 6th year participating in the walk.

Zachary was born on September 10, 2013 with a congenital heart defect (planned) and a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (unplanned). He was born at Lutheran General Hospital placed on an oscillating ventilator and was transferred immediately to University of Chicago where days later he underwent the diaphragmatic hernia repair. Once he was strong enough, he transferred to Advocate Christ Hospital where he was being followed by Dr. Ilbawi and Dr. Husayni's amazing teams for his "unique" congenital heart defect.

Zachary was the Moose of the NICU where he received the best care from the NICU team of Nurses and Physicians as well as wound care and Music Therapy which he LOVED. He spent the next 6 weeks with some ups and a lot of downs. This is where the Ronald McDonald House comes in. After an extremely uneasy night, we were able to secure a room at the Ronald McDonald house where I had been driving back and forth 45 minutes one way each day. The loving volunteers of RMHC made sure that you were fed. The facilities were beautiful and the staff tried their best to engage you in ways where you could feel like a "normal" parent.

Zachary passed away at 9 weeks old on November 18, 2013. He went through more in those 9 weeks than most of us go through in a lifetime, but he fought to be here. His short life impacted more than you could ever imagine. He brought together some of the most beautiful people that I am still in contact with today. He also connected us with people from our past and his journey was watched by so many.

Zach's sister, Samantha, and brother Nathan Zachary, know all about Zach and his journey. They talk about him and ask questions. They say Zach is up "in the moon and the stars" and say "good night" to him every night. He has changed us all and will never be forgotten.

This walk is in memory of Zachary. We walk with our closest family and friends whom we could not have gotten through the loss without them by our sides. We would not have gotten up and out and back to a routine so quickly without them in our lives. I am forever grateful and lucky to have the best people supporting us.
